Hästholmen is a scenic old port village on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern in southern Sweden.
As part of the municipality’s planning for a handful of new lots for houses along a new village street, a larger corner lot was reserved for a developer competition. The aim was to balance the domination of larger private houses in the area, and offer alternatives for target groups like young families and seniors.
The proposal attempts to combine the comfort and efficiency of a medium sized apartment with the local housing market’s wish for private outdoor spaces and gardens. The group of ten small houses, separated only by walkways and low hedges, gives a sense of place and community with social qualities of a dense village, still clearly defining the private zone of the individual house and garden.
